Nurturing Healing Through Connection and Nature

At Fox Moon Farm, every program is thoughtfully crafted to support individuals on their healing journeys. In today’s complex world, some of us may find ourselves in need of additional support, and we’re here to provide that helping hand. Surrounded by the beauty of our expansive land and a diverse array of animals, we cultivate an environment where healing can thrive.

Whether you find solace in nurturing a garden, or attending a wellness workshop, or you seek the guidance of our horses to help reduce your anxiety or anger, we offer programs tailored to meet your unique needs. Explore the option that resonates with you, and let’s embark on this transformative journey together. Reach out to us to discover how we can assist in your healing process!

Healing with Horses

Healing with Horses is an interactive, farm-based Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) program that teaches critical life skills and fosters emotional healing for children and adults with special needs and those with complex trauma.

It is a collaborative effort between a professional horse specialist (and equine specialist), the horses and the client(s). This is an experiential mode of therapy, which means it is based on activities on the ground with the horses. This is an unmounted program, although we do offer therapeutic horseback riding as well.

Centered around different activities (both with and without horses), participants (and their families and support staff) become part of a learning and healing experience in which they gain knowledge and information about how to build self confidence, reduce anxiety, engage in healthy relationships, build trust, learn effective social, communication and decision-making skills, how to manage their anger and more.

Community Garden

Gardening has been shown to lighten one’s mood and lower levels of stress and anxiety. It’s very gratifying to plant, tend, harvest and share your own food. A Community Garden is much more than that.

Many in our community struggle making ends meet and access to fresh produce is limited. Working in our garden not only helps break the cycle of poverty, but helps empower our neighbors to “dream, aspire and achieve”.

Every season, we produce, harvest and deliver hundreds of pounds of produce to families in need in our community. Our gardens not only support food insecure families, but also teach our clients the value of hard work, getting their hands dirty and the value of supporting others in need.

Farm Trips

Discover the perfect getaway on our serene 60-acre farm, nestled in the heart of stunning countryside. At The Fox Moon Farm Project, we invite you to leave behind the chaos of everyday life and immerse yourself in our Farm Gatherings, designed to help you reconnect, rejuvenate, and celebrate the beauty of togetherness in a world that often feels overwhelming.

Whether you’re hosting a special celebration, reuniting with family, hosting a corporate retreat, or simply seeking a moment to pause and breathe, our farm provides an idyllic setting for meaningful connections. Dive into our sparkling lake for a refreshing swim, or enjoy a leisurely boat ride while surrounded by breathtaking views. Spend quality time with our gentle horses and adorable miniature donkeys, or be entertained by the playful antics of our baby goats. Feed our cheerful chickens, or unwind in our cozy cabana by the lake—where relaxation is as effortless as the gentle breeze.

Interesting Facts About Autism: Uniquely Wired, Uniquely Gifted

Did you know? Individuals with autism often experience the world in profoundly different — and remarkable — ways. 🌟

Here are a few things that make autistic individuals truly extraordinary:
✨ Heightened sensory awareness. Many autistic individuals can notice details others miss entirely — textures, sounds, patterns, and energy shifts that most people walk right past.
✨ Exceptional memory. A significant number have remarkable recall for facts, sequences, and systems they're passionate about.
✨ Deep focus and passion. When an autistic person finds their area of interest, their ability to dive deep and master it is extraordinary.
✨ Energetic sensitivity. Many autistic children are highly attuned to the emotional and energetic states of others — and especially animals. Horses often form deep, intuitive bonds with them for exactly this reason.
✨ Creative brilliance. From visual art to music to systems thinking, autistic individuals often see and create in ways neurotypical minds simply don't.
At Fox Moon Farm, we don't see challenges — we see unique, beautiful human beings who need the right environment to thrive. Our horses seem to agree. 🐴

🌿 A Day of Joy at Fox Moon Farm 🌿

There are days here at The Fox Moon Farm Project that remind us exactly why we do this work — and our recent visit from the Autism Society Central Virginia was one of them.

We were honored to welcome a wonderful group of families to the farm for an afternoon of connection, discovery, and a whole lot of laughter.

The day began with our horses and donkeys. Before any hellos, the children learned important safety lessons from Kylie — how to approach a horse, how to offer a gentle hand at feeding time, and how to read these big, kind animals. Then came the grooming! Our miniature donkey Nappy soaked up every bit of attention, and the children met Merlin, one of our oldest and sweetest rescues. (And yes — when Nappy decided it was the perfect moment to poop, our little farmhands jumped right in to help clean up. Real farm work, after all! 💩😄)

After a snack and some water back at the community center, we headed to the henhouse to spend time with our goats, chickens, and of course Sassy the pig. The children lit up gathering eggs and scattering feed for the hens.
And what's a farm day without a ride? Everyone took turns on the tractor and golf cart as we made our way down to the lake to hunt for turtles and frogs. 🐸
To the team at Autism Society Central Virginia — thank you for spending the day with us. Watching these children explore, care, and connect with our animals is the heart of everything we believe in: the healing power of nature, one gentle moment at a time.

We can't wait for our next adventure together. 🦊🌙

What Does an Equine Assisted Farm Based Learning Session Look Like?

This right here is Desi, and he is WORKING. 💪

He's not playing pretend. He's not doing a worksheet. He is shoveling real compost that will feed real soil that will grow real food. And he knows it.

That sense of genuine, meaningful contribution? It's one of the most powerful things that happens at Fox Moon Farm.

So — what does a session actually look like here? Every session is one hour, one-on-one, and completely individualized. We start by checking in: how is your family member feeling today? What do they need?

From there, the session unfolds naturally. Some days that looks like: 🐴 Grooming and bonding with one of our horses 🫏 Feeding and caring for our mini donkeys 🐐 Learning responsibility through goat care 🐷 Visiting our pet pig, Sassy 🌱 Getting their hands in the soil in our garden 🌾 Farm chores that build strength, routine, and pride.

Every single activity is purposeful. Measuring feed teaches math and focus. Mucking the donkey pen supports gross motor skills and the satisfaction of completing something real. Earning a horse's trust teaches patience and self-regulation. Leading an animal builds communication and confidence.

Our clients leave each session having had real fun AND having practiced real life skills. 💚
