Horseback Riding Program

Harness the Therapeutic Power of Horses

In addition to teaching traditional horseback riding skills, we focus on the emotional, behavioral and psychological benefits of horseback riding. Many of our students come to us with anxiety, low self esteem, depression and lack of emotional regulation skills. Horseback riding provides not only fun, outdoor activities, where the student can be challenged to learn how to ride a horse, but also learn critical life skills in the process.

Our program has three main focuses:

  • Before a student rides, everyone learns basic horsemanship. This includes recognizing and learning to read horse behavior, basic anatomy, tack parts, and feeding. They also learn safety: approaching, haltering, tying (safety knots), leading and grooming, identifying body parts and hoof care.Β
  • Every student will also learn how to ride a horse. This includes balance & posture, understanding their horse’s gaits (walk, trot, and canter), mastering the leg, seat, hand cues for communicating, and building a trusting relationship with their horse.
  • Perhaps most importantly, we teach mindfulness and critical life skills, like how to reduce anxiety, regulate emotions, build self confidence, social and communication skills and more. We also spend a lot of time working on mastering gross and fine motor skills, language development, and following directions.

Riding horses involves a unique repetitive motion that activates various parts of the brain. The child’s body moves in sync with the horse’s gait and this constant need to adjust and maintain balance has a calming effect on the brain, making it easier for riders to regulate their emotions.

Students work one-on-one with our certified riding instructor, to learn riding skills, while also practicing mindfulness to become more self aware, and also enhancing the bond with their horse. Through this approach, riders not only gain the physical benefits of horseback riding, but also emotional, social, and cognitive benefits as well.

What differentiates us from a traditional riding program are the horsemanship skills we teach, but also the behavioral and emotional support we provide, setting equestrian students up with the foundational skills needed to navigate the world, grounded, confident and with a firm footing.

Social and Emotional Benefits:
  • Emotional regulation: The rhythmic motion of horse riding has a calming effect on the brain, making it easier for riders to regulate their emotions, helping individuals learn management techniques and reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem: Successfully riding and partnering with a horse fosters a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-confidence.
  • Enhanced social skills: The program encourages communication and teamwork, as participants often interact with instructors, peers, and the horses themselves, improving social interactions and relationships.
  • Sense of responsibility: Caring for and riding a horse instills a sense of responsibility and discipline, as participants learn to understand and meet the needs of their equine partners.
  • Mindfulness and presence: We teach breath work and mindfulness which is incorporated throughout the lesson. Students are taught how to “be in the moment”, promoting a deeper connection with oneself and the nature around them.
Physical Benefits:
  • Improved balance and coordination: Riding a horse requires maintaining balance and coordinating movements with the horse, which strengthens core muscles and enhances overall body awareness.
  • Enhanced muscle tone and flexibility: The act of riding works various muscle groups, promoting muscle tone and flexibility, particularly in the legs, back, and abdomen.
  • Cardiovascular health: Horseback riding is an excellent form of exercise, contributing to improved cardiovascular health and stamina.
  • Refined motor skills: The repetitive actions involved in riding, such as guiding the horse and adjusting posture, help refine gross & fine motor skills and overall dexterity.

Our dedicated team of professionals is committed to creating a supportive and nurturing environment where participants can thrive physically, socially, and emotionally. We look forward to guiding and challenging you on this enriching journey with our gentle and intuitive horses.

Interesting Facts About Autism: Uniquely Wired, Uniquely Gifted

Did you know? Individuals with autism often experience the world in profoundly different β€” and remarkable β€” ways. 🌟

Here are a few things that make autistic individuals truly extraordinary:
✨ Heightened sensory awareness. Many autistic individuals can notice details others miss entirely β€” textures, sounds, patterns, and energy shifts that most people walk right past.
✨ Exceptional memory. A significant number have remarkable recall for facts, sequences, and systems they're passionate about.
✨ Deep focus and passion. When an autistic person finds their area of interest, their ability to dive deep and master it is extraordinary.
✨ Energetic sensitivity. Many autistic children are highly attuned to the emotional and energetic states of others β€” and especially animals. Horses often form deep, intuitive bonds with them for exactly this reason.
✨ Creative brilliance. From visual art to music to systems thinking, autistic individuals often see and create in ways neurotypical minds simply don't.
At Fox Moon Farm, we don't see challenges β€” we see unique, beautiful human beings who need the right environment to thrive. Our horses seem to agree. 🐴

🌿 A Day of Joy at Fox Moon Farm 🌿

There are days here at The Fox Moon Farm Project that remind us exactly why we do this work β€” and our recent visit from the Autism Society Central Virginia was one of them.

We were honored to welcome a wonderful group of families to the farm for an afternoon of connection, discovery, and a whole lot of laughter.

The day began with our horses and donkeys. Before any hellos, the children learned important safety lessons from Kylie β€” how to approach a horse, how to offer a gentle hand at feeding time, and how to read these big, kind animals. Then came the grooming! Our miniature donkey Nappy soaked up every bit of attention, and the children met Merlin, one of our oldest and sweetest rescues. (And yes β€” when Nappy decided it was the perfect moment to poop, our little farmhands jumped right in to help clean up. Real farm work, after all! πŸ’©πŸ˜„)

After a snack and some water back at the community center, we headed to the henhouse to spend time with our goats, chickens, and of course Sassy the pig. The children lit up gathering eggs and scattering feed for the hens.
And what's a farm day without a ride? Everyone took turns on the tractor and golf cart as we made our way down to the lake to hunt for turtles and frogs. 🐸
To the team at Autism Society Central Virginia β€” thank you for spending the day with us. Watching these children explore, care, and connect with our animals is the heart of everything we believe in: the healing power of nature, one gentle moment at a time.

We can't wait for our next adventure together. πŸ¦ŠπŸŒ™

What Does an Equine Assisted Farm Based Learning Session Look Like?

This right here is Desi, and he is WORKING. πŸ’ͺ

He's not playing pretend. He's not doing a worksheet. He is shoveling real compost that will feed real soil that will grow real food. And he knows it.

That sense of genuine, meaningful contribution? It's one of the most powerful things that happens at Fox Moon Farm.

So β€” what does a session actually look like here? Every session is one hour, one-on-one, and completely individualized. We start by checking in: how is your family member feeling today? What do they need?

From there, the session unfolds naturally. Some days that looks like: 🐴 Grooming and bonding with one of our horses 🫏 Feeding and caring for our mini donkeys 🐐 Learning responsibility through goat care 🐷 Visiting our pet pig, Sassy 🌱 Getting their hands in the soil in our garden 🌾 Farm chores that build strength, routine, and pride.

Every single activity is purposeful. Measuring feed teaches math and focus. Mucking the donkey pen supports gross motor skills and the satisfaction of completing something real. Earning a horse's trust teaches patience and self-regulation. Leading an animal builds communication and confidence.

Our clients leave each session having had real fun AND having practiced real life skills. πŸ’š
