Nature Heals
Bring your classroom children or summer camp kids and gather eggs, feed the goats, groom the horses and help harvest vegetables. Enjoy a box lunch, then take a hay ride around the field and bang on a drum at our final community drum circle. Our Farm Day Trips are designed for all ages and all are welcome.
Farm Trips include educational programs to inspire children to engage in, learn about and enjoy agriculture, nature, science and gardening. We believe the more “hands on” the better, especially when it comes to children. We provide a magic mix of animals, nature, learning and doing. We offer a variety of programs and each can be modified depending on age and abilities. Here is a sampling of Day Trips that support camps and school programs. Farm Day Trips
“The students in my special needs class are middle and high school students, grade 7-11th. We visited Fox Moon Farm several times last year and my class looked forward to the visit every time. At first the class was shy being around chickens, goats, horses and Sassy the pig. Maria carefully explained the class how to feed the goats and chickens and Sassy.
The visits to the farm helped to teach my class the importance of teamwork. My students work together now and help each other. They have the confidence to ask people in the school if they need help and are willing to help. I was amazed one of student who had been hesitant at first last year to even brush a horse, walked right up and gave the followed the directions given to him and walked the horse in and around training obstacles. Every one of my students have developed the attitude “I can” because of this program”.

Exploring Eggs: How does an egg get from the hen to your table? Learn about egg production, egg nutrition, egg safety, types of eggs, parts of an egg and then lets go into the barn, pick some eggs and crack some open. Take some home to make for breakfast the next day.
Farms, Produce, Food: Spring and summer is a busy time for farmers. Visit the gardens, fields, and greenhouse to discover fruits and vegetables growing. Get your hands dirty by planting. Investigate the parts of a plant and their lifecycle. Observe a variety of plant life in our orchards, meadows, and fields on a hayride. Pick some veggies to take home.
Animal Homes: Explore how wild animals around Fox Moon Farm live. Children will walk around the farm in search of animal homes and then construct a shelter for animals using natural materials. A visit to the animal barn will provide a contrasting view of animal shelters. Then it’s off to the classroom where the children will create bird feeders to hang on the farm for the year round residents.
Summer on the Farm: Learn how ice cream is made the old fashioned way! See how liquid changes into a solid by freezing in a hand-cranked ice cream freezer and taste the sweet results. Explore the farm’s 60 acres on a hayride. Visit our animals in the barn and pastures. The program runs during the summer and is suitable for all ages.
Pollinator Power: Discover pollinators and the important role they play in our ecosystem. Visit our observation beehive and explore the gardens searching for pollinators hard at work. Become a pollinator and help plants make seeds. This program runs from spring through summer and is suitable for all ages.
Scats & Tracks: Students will explore what wild animals from VA eat and what they leave behind, scat and tracks. Students will match scat to the animal that left it and learn about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Visit the farm animals and compare their scat to wild animals. Make your own tracks and scat in the classroom using a variety of materials.
Feathers & Fur: Goats, chickens, horses, dogs, cats and a pig all call Fox Moon Farm home. Get to know each of the different animals, how they are cared for, and why they are raised on farms. Compare and contrast different animal shapes, sizes, and body coverings. Explore the basics of animal husbandry. This program runs year round and is suitable for all ages.
Composting & Worms: Let’s explore decomposition together! Investigate the farm’s compost piles and discover the process of decomposition. Learn composting basics and explore nutrient cycles. Examine our red wiggler worms and learn how they turn food scraps into soil.
