Leslie Moy

Secretary, Director

Leslie grew up in suburban Maryland surrounded by a loving family but bereft of animals. She promptly became a perpetual beginner horseback rider as soon as she could afford it and cloying dog parent as soon as she could commit the time to it. She’s been a volunteer literacy teacher for many decades working with adults and youngsters, and the chairperson on her condominium board’s ‘Building and Grounds Committee’ which monitors the condominium’s engineering safety and aesthetics.Β  In the real world she is a senior scientist for a NASA contractor calibrating satellites that measure ozone in the stratosphere. She is proud to serve as secretary and be a part ofΒ the Fox Moon Farm Project.

Nature as Medicine: The Science Behind Farm-Based Healing

"Nature always wears the colors of Spirit." β€” Ralph Waldo Emerson 🌿

We believe that in our bones. And now science is beginning to prove it.
Research on nature-based therapy β€” sometimes called "ecotherapy" or "green care" β€” shows consistent results:

🌿 Time in natural settings lowers cortisol (the primary stress hormone) by measurable amounts within minutes.
🌿 Exposure to nature reduces symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
🌿 Farm-based activities improve attention, focus, and executive function in children with ADHD and autism.
🌿 Gardening has been shown to increase serotonin and reduce inflammation.
🌿 Being around animals lowers blood pressure and promotes a sense of calm and safety.

For children who struggle with big emotions, overwhelming environments, and a nervous system stuck in survival mode β€” the farm is not a luxury. It is medicine.

At Fox Moon Farm, our 60-acre property in King and Queen County, Virginia is a living classroom and healing space β€” where horses, gardens, open fields, and caring human beings work together to help children and adults find their way back to themselves.

Come as you are. Leave with more than you imagined. πŸ’š

The Mirror Effect: What Your Energy Tells a Horse

Here's something that surprises most people when they first visit Fox Moon Farm:

You don't have to say a word. The horse already knows.

Horses are the ultimate energetic mirrors. As prey animals, their survival has always depended on reading the environment β€” including the internal states of those around them. They sense elevated heart rates. They detect tension in your body before your brain registers it. They respond to your emotional field.

When an individual arrives at the farm feeling anxious or shut down, our horses reflect that back β€” not with judgment, but with honest, real-time feedback. And when that same child takes a breath, softens their grip, and finds a moment of calm? The horse responds. It steps closer. It softens too.

For children and adults who have spent years masking their emotions, performing for others, or disconnecting from their bodies β€” this is revolutionary.

A horse asks you to be real. And in doing so, it gives you back something precious: yourself.

This is at the heart of what we do in our Equine Assisted Learning sessions at Fox Moon Farm. No prior horse experience needed β€” just a willingness to show up authentically. 🐴

ACE: When 12 Out of 20 Children Carry Hidden Wounds

Here's a number that stopped us in our tracks:

In Virginia, 12 out of every 20 children have experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) β€” events like trauma, abuse, neglect, or household instability.

That's 60% of our kids. Carrying wounds that aren't always visible. Struggling with emotions they don't have words for. Acting out in ways that look like behavior problems β€” when really, they're signs of a nervous system that never learned it was safe.

At The Fox Moon Farm Project, we know these children. We work with them every week.

And we know that nature, animals, and the right environment can begin to reach them when nothing else has.

Through our Healing with Horses program and farm-based learning, we help children who have experienced trauma:

🌿 Learn to manage anger and regulate their emotions
🌿 Reduce anxiety and quiet an overactive stress response
🌿 Build self-confidence and a sense of their own strength
🌿 Develop trust β€” first with animals, then with people

A farm is not a clinic. But sometimes, healing doesn't start in a clinic.

Sometimes it starts with a horse standing quietly beside a child who's never felt truly safe β€” and staying there until they do.

Visit foxmoonfarm.org to learn more about our programs and how we support children who have experienced ACEs. πŸ’š
